Which UPS Bypass Switch do I need for my Business?

When it comes to bypass switches, some claim they are a non-essential component of your power protection plan, as your uninterruptable power supply (UPS) system can still function without them. However, bypass switches fulfil a very significant role that must not be overlooked. Despite their importance, many still confuse the two main types of bypass switches available and are unsure which one they need for their business. To help, we have compared the external and internal variations below.

External bypass switches

An external bypass switch (also known as a wrap-around bypass) is a wall or rack mounted panel close to your UPS system. These can be connected to 1/1, 3/1 and 3/3 UPS systems by means of hardwiring or a ‘plug and play’ mechanism. External bypass switches fully isolate the UPS i.e., they supply power to the critical load by diverting mains electricity around the system. The benefit of this is that IT systems can continue running without disruption, enabling the UPS to be more rigorously tested during servicing and even removed if it is in need of repair.

Internal bypass switches

Another type of bypass switch is one that operates within the UPS system itself. Internal bypass switches are a feature of most systems above 5kVA and only partially isolate them, meaning live power still runs to parts of the UPS. Therefore, internal bypass switches offer less flexibility than external ones, as only basic maintenance can be conducted on areas of the UPS that are isolated and it cannot be removed. Taking this into account, if you have not already invested in one, we strongly advise you to find an external bypass switch to complement your UPS system.
